Senator John McCain was pushing another Paranoia Button at a Town Hall meeting in Springfield, Pennsylvania on Friday 14 March. Some bright spark asked him if he was worried about al Qaeda trying to turn the election against him.
McCain who disagrees strongly with Clinton and Obama’s campaign pledges to withdraw U.S. troops speedily, said he was concerned "-they might be able to carry out some spectacular suicide attacks -" referring to Al Qaeda. He also acknowledged General David Petraeus, “-as one of the greatest generals in American history."
Only the day before, General Petraeus said in Iraq that he would temporarily freeze
further reductions in its troop presence. This would be to allow for a, "- period of consolidation and evaluation -" The main reason for this action was the Iraqis' failure to achieve political reconciliation. Iraqi parliament members accepted that there were problems but felt that American expectations are driven by considerations in Washington and do not reflect the complexity of Iraq's problems.
